In its raw state, pot’s main compound tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCa) is not psychotropic and cannot get you stoned.
If you want to release weed’s psychoactive properties, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), you need to light it on fire via some implement of combustion, like a bong, pipe, joint, etc. Or you have to heat it in an oven at a specific temperature for a certain amount of time. Or vaporize it. All of which are referred to as decarboxylation.
Experiencing Cannabis Decarboxylation Via Inhalation
When you smoke weed via some form of combustion, its THCa molecules cease to retain their carboxylic acids, which are “organic compounds that contain a carboxyl group (C(=O)OH).” When THCa loses its carboxyl group it changes to the beloved molecule that gets us stoned, THC.
Once the weed is lit on fire or heated via a vaporizer, the THC enters our lungs in the form of carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O) vapor and continues into the bloodstream giving us the sought after psychoactive high.
Experiencing Cannabis Decarboxylation Via Oral Ingestion
Eating raw weed is said to have many health benefits. But, if you want to get high from oral ingestion, pot needs to be decarboxylated first.
Decarboxylating your weed is super simple to do. However, if you’re not careful, the only thing that will be getting baked is your oven.
Here’s a list of simple steps for switching pot’s THCa molecules into THC:
1- Position oven rack to middle position
2- Preheat your oven to 240 degrees Fahrenheit
3- Place an even layer of cannabis in an oven-safe glass pie plate or baking dish (tip: weed that’s broken up or ran through a grinder decarboxylates a bit better than buds)
4- Cover and seal the glass dish with aluminum foil (tip: covering the dish with foil helps to keep all of the essential oils from evaporating into the oven while decarboxylating your pot)
5- Place the covered dish in the oven
6- Heat cannabis for approximately 50-60 minutes
7- Remove the covered glass dish from the oven and allow to cool before removing the foil (tip: keeping the weed covered while it cools down will help it absorb essential oil vapors trapped under the foil)
8- Once cooled, the now decarboxylated cannabis can be ingested as-is, or it can be used to infuse butter or oil for cooking purposes
